Ruins

Throughout Humanities Core we have focused on different Empires and their ruins. In the last couple of years I have traveled to different countries in Europe and seen many of the ruins we have talked about or that have been mentioned. My favorite part about this class is learning history about the places that I have visited. Even without the fact the I have visited many of the places, the topic about Empires and their ruins is actually interesting. It's interesting to make connections from Empires back then and societies today, because although some of these empires were thousands and thousands of years ago there are definitely some similarities to today's societies. For example in 2012 the elections costed 3 million and back in the day Caesar borrowed so much on his campaign that he was scared he would be ruined if he did not win the election. In the ancient times the people wanted to hold public office to accumulate personal wealth. That has not changed today. Many Congressmen and Senators promote themselves to gain wealth instead of caring for the people. Throughout human history I think it can be said that it is human nature to be naturally selfish unless taught otherwise. We also tend to be in constant state of war just as it was in the ancient Roman Empire. As you can see there are many similarities between the ancient Empires and the United States. What I always wonder is what will be the demise of the United States? Every single Empire has fallen and it makes me curious to know if and when the United States will fall. Taking Humanities Core has really made me think about things in a different way. We have not only learned about Empires and their Ruins but also different reading, writing, and thinking skills. I have learned to really look outside the box when analyzing either a piece of literature or painting. What I also think was interesting was analyzing a film. I would have never thought of breaking up a film and wondering why producers, directors, and screenwriters etc do certain things. Usually you just watch a movie decide if it was good or not and call it a day. But now the game has been changed up. I don’t think I will ever be able to watch a movie again without analyzing every aspect of it. Which is kind of cool because I’ll seem smart but at the same time it will be annoying to not be able to just watch a movie and enjoy it. This class has definitely taught me new skills and I look forward to continuing to learn more in the year.
